Time and space, the 'protagonists' of the fable of the Ondt and the Gracehoper play an important role in this illusion. In Schopenhauer's words: "We have called time and space the principium individuationis, because only through them and in them is multiplicity of the homogeneous possible." (WWI vol. I, book IV § 61, 427). Cf. also Schopenhauer's thesis "that not time only but also space, and the whole content of both of them, i.e., all that proceeds from causes and motives, has a merely relative existence." (WWI vol.
